The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) works with healthcare professionals and public health officials around the world to raise awareness of COPD and to improve prevention and treatment of this lung disease. Through the development of evidence-based strategy documents for COPD management, and events such as the annual celebration of World COPD Day, GOLD is working to improve the lives of people with COPD in every corner of the globe.

GOLD was launched in 1997 in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA, and the World Health Organization. GOLD’s program is determined and its guidelines for COPD care are shaped by committees made up of leading experts from around the world.

Target Audience
This activity addresses the needs of physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals involved with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with COPD.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is now one of the top three cause of death worldwide and 90% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (Halpin 2019). More than 3 million people died of COPD in 2012, accounting for 6% of all deaths globally. COPD represents an important public health challenge that is both preventable and treatable. In 1998, with cooperation of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) was implemented. GOLD’s goals were to increase awareness of the burden of COPD and to improve prevention and management of COPD through a concerned worldwide effort of people involved in all facets of healthcare and healthcare policy. The proposed activity is a part of this mission and is designed to review key components of the GOLD strategy report that may have clinically meaningful impact, address current identified barriers to optimal COPD care, and provide education that is relevant and meaningful to the global audience of healthcare providers involved in COPD care.
